It is going to be a great year!
Dear Families,
I want to welcome you and your child to a new school year! My name is Cristin Carole, and I will be your child’s first grade teacher for the Sutherland Elementary 2022-2023 school year. I am committed to building a cohesive classroom community and getting to know your family better. I will be using several communication tools that will help us to get off to a smooth start. Please keep this letter in place for future reference.
MONDAY MEMOS
To assist you with learning at home, I will be sharing a weekly summary outlining themes, concepts, words of the week, vocabulary words, and other projects. I may also include progress reports, commendations or concerns regarding student work or class conduct. The Monday Memo and any other letters from the school or I can be found in our Google Classroom in the appropriate folder or on the school website. Please check our Google Classroom “stream” for important communications often!
HOMEWORK FOLDER
Your child will have approximately 20 minutes of homework (Mon.-Thurs.) in addition to fifteen minutes of independent or guided reading each day. Please check and sign the bottom of each assignment your child completes. Homework includes daily math worksheets, word study practice, and a leveled reader. Please check the folder each day for important communications from the school. Please read to your child daily!
PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION
I am available for conferences at school between 7:30-7:55 AM on Tues. and Thurs. and from 3:10-4:10 PM on Wed and Fri. Please send a note or email at least one day in advance so I can prepare information on your child’s progress and/or address any specific concerns you may have. Generally, the best way to reach me is by email: [email protected]. I prefer that you use the Remind app to leave any other messages but please do not call during instructional time from 8-3pm.
I am sure the success of your child is important to you. By following a few of the suggestions I have outlined for you on the next page, you will be doing your part to ensure that your child develops into an effective, responsible, self-manager.
Sincerely,
Cristin Carole

Learning at home
The ability to follow directions is crucial to the work we are doing in 1st grade! You can support us by engaging your child in simple activities at home like, cooking from a recipe, learning to use the washing machine, or making a bed. A gradual release of responsibility, authentic purpose, attention to detail and strong sense of community work at both home and school!
